Great question (not sure who it was for, but I’ll answer it).  I over-simplified the reality and this is basically a caricature of what school really is.  The truth is that this graph makes problem solving and memorization mutually exclusive when in fact they are not.   We need both problem solving and memorization to produce good students and good people.  If nothing else, it helps to study and have “memorized” the mistakes other people made while they fumbled through life.  That way we fumble less egregiously than they did.
